Kathmandu, 24 May 2026

The UK Minister for Indo-Pacific and Minister for Equalities, Ms. Seema Malhotra, engaged in high-level discussions with Nepali entrepreneurs and key stakeholders during a special interaction program organized by the Nepal Britain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NBCCI) under the theme “UK as a Full Spectrum Education Partner for Nepal.”

The program brought together representatives from Nepal and the United Kingdom, including education sector leaders, vocational and skills assessment organizations, UK-affiliated schools, education consultancies, business leaders, independent experts, and officials from Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The discussions focused on strengthening Nepal–UK cooperation in education governance systems, vocational training, skills development, higher education, research collaboration, transnational education (TNE), and institutional partnerships.

UK Reaffirms Long-Term Commitment to Nepal’s Education Sector

Minister Malhotra described Nepal–UK cooperation in education as a “full spectrum education partnership” spanning decades and covering all levels of learning—from school education and teacher training to higher education and professional development.

She emphasized that the United Kingdom remains a trusted partner for Nepal in advancing human capital development.

“The UK will remain a valuable and reliable education partner for Nepal, bringing benefits to people in both our nations,” she said.

She further highlighted that education is central to economic transformation, stressing that skills, adaptability, and quality learning systems are essential for modern economies. She also noted the importance of transnational education in enabling Nepali students to access UK qualifications within Nepal, expanding opportunity while strengthening local capacity.

Shared Vision for Skills, Growth, and Opportunity

The interaction highlighted the evolving nature of Nepal–UK cooperation as Nepal advances its reform agenda in education and skills development.

UK Ambassador to Nepal, Rob Fenn, underlined continued UK support through the British Embassy and the British Council in strengthening education outcomes in Nepal. He emphasized evidence-based policy making and the growing role of the private sector as an “engine for employment” and economic growth.

He reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Nepal’s education reforms, particularly in foundational learning and quality assurance systems.

NBCCI Highlights Importance of Bilateral Collaboration

Speaking at the program, Dr. Roshan Rathi, President of NBCCI, emphasized the importance of sustained dialogue and partnership between stakeholders from Nepal and the United Kingdom to deepen collaboration in education and skills development.

He noted that platforms like this interaction help strengthen institutional linkages and create meaningful opportunities for academic and professional cooperation between the two countries.

Expanding Education and Institutional Linkages

The event also highlighted the expanding footprint of UK education in Nepal, with growing institutional partnerships, including collaborations between UK universities and Nepali academic institutions. These partnerships are contributing to increased access to quality education and skill-based learning opportunities for Nepali students.

Participants acknowledged that Nepal–UK educational cooperation is becoming increasingly comprehensive, spanning schools, higher education institutions, technical training providers, and research networks.

A Living Bridge Through Education

The interaction reaffirmed the strong people-to-people ties between Nepal and the United Kingdom, with education continuing to serve as a key pillar of bilateral relations.

With Nepali students forming one of the largest international student groups in the UK, both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening student support systems, preparation, and quality assurance.

The program concluded with a shared commitment to further deepen the Nepal–UK education partnership, fostering skills, innovation, and opportunities for future generations.
